ARIANA 3104 1968

I bought this now rare Japanese guitar off a bass-player near Winkworth Arboretum in 1970 when I first started earning. I'd been playing a year and realised a steel-string acoustic was what I needed. And this, at £15, was considerably cheaper than a Martin - and actually had the same well-balanced sound, only quieter. It had a tone that cut through much better than most of the acoustics my friends had.

I learned to play and perform on it, and it remained my main guitar until I bought the Lowden 14 years later.

Modifications really consist of nothing more than hard wear, though it's had a variety of string gauges. With the current 12s it's great as a rhythm guitar for recording.

Oh yes, I did fit a bone bridge to it at some stage.
