ALVIN DAVIES PACIFIC RESONATOR
GUITAR 1993
Alvin Davies is a
talented maker of high-end acoustics and (don't tell him I told you)
custom electrics whom I've known for many years.
I bought this from him
in 1996 with my share of the proceeds when I sold my son's drum kit. Most dobros are made of plywood - Alvin's concept was to use quality
hardwood, in this case Wenge, for face, back and sides of the OM size
body. Add that to a honduras mahogany neck, ebony fingerboard and
headstock front and back, plus maple inlay and Kluson tuners, and you
have a beautiful guitar. Though it weighs a ton. Alvin also decorated
it with a palm tree motif in copper and abalone.
We originally fitted it with 13
gauge strings for slide, but I've now moderated to 12s to make fingerpicking easier for those authentic 30s blues sounds.
I also replaced Alvin's metal bridge-pieces with maple to soften the
tone a bit.
